It’s Think Ahead Thursday in Green Office Week, so let’s put some thought into making green practices an everyday routine. Not being eco-conscious costs us money – simply by leaving the lights on, for example, UK businesses waste £120m each year.
So, at the end of the office day, switch off all your electrical equipment – computers, printers and lights – before you go home. Turn off your mobile phone charger at the wall socket when it is fully charged. Save energy by turning your radiator down one degree (you’ll barely notice the difference), and if it’s a sunny day turn off any unnecessary lights.
Offices can be paper guzzlers, so remember to use the recycling bin, and recycle scrap paper in to scratch pads – a bulldog clip is all you need. Prioritise before you print. Some documents, such as contracts and invoices may need to be printed to be kept on file, but do you need reams of emails?
Try to choose ink cartridges with a longer printing life – the branded ink cartridges such as HP and Epson guarantee that their cartridges last longer than some of the compatible cartridges and have tested this.
Look for paper that has the FSC mark, it’s a sign that it comes from sustainable sources. Choose recycled tationery, there’s a range suitable for all sorts of purposes. For personal correspondence, for example we have Basildon Bond’s Pocket Peel and Seal envelopes. These 90gsm C5 Manilla envelopes stick down neatly and are made of 100% recycled paper.
If you want something more substantial, there’s 5 Star’s Heavy Press Seal Manilla Envelopes. The C4 envelopes are made of 100% recycled 115gsm paper. If you buy 2 you get 1 pack free.
Finally, there’s the ever useful recycled Post-it notes. In the traditional canary yellow, these are also made of 100% recycled paper.
