Introduction to our Photocopier Guide
Our Photocopier Product Guide will take you through the different types available, such as portable copiers, desktop copiers andall-in-one copiers. We also explain the basics of how a photocopier works, as well as the different attributes you will find on the products specifications. Our range includes Canon photocopiers,Kyocera Photocopiers andSharp Photocopiers.
How a photocopier works
| Inside a photocopier is a drum, which can be chargedwith static electricity, and toner, which is a fine black powder. When parts of the drum are charged, the toneris attracted to them. Light is moved across the document to be copied, andwhere blank paper is found, reflected back onto the drum. This cancels out the charged parts, and thetoner is then spread over the drum, sticking to any parts left. (i.e., theblack parts on the original document.) Paper passed through the photocopier isthen charged so that the toner on the drum is attracted to it. The paper is then heated so that it fuses tothe paper to form a replica of the original document. | Types of photocopier |
Portable Photocopiers Portable copiers are about the same size as a standard scanner, and can be easily moved around an office using build in handles. They are usually manual sheet by sheet feed, although automatic feeder accessories are available. Due to their size A4 is usually the maximum paper size they can accommodate, and the quality of the copies may not be as good as on a standard photocopier. They are often used for home businesses or personal use.
Desktop Photocopiers The term desktop copier can be misleading, as standard sized photocopiers usually take up the whole of the desk. They are commonly used in offices and are stand-alone machines. Although considerably more expensive than portable copiers, the print quality and reliability is far superior.
All-in-one Photocopiers All-in-one machines are often used by businesses as a way of saving space. Most incorporate printing scanning and faxing capabilities along with the copying. These machines can be networked to multiple computers in an office, although the copying part must still be operated manually. However they come with automatic feeders so the machine can run without supervision.
Photocopier attributes
Copy Resolution This determines the quality of the copied documents. It is measured in pixels or dpi, dots-per-inch. The higher the dpi count, the better quality your copies will be. Note: The quality of the copy will be limited bythe quality of the document being copied.
Copy Speed This is the speed the copier can operate at, and is measure in pps, pages per minute.Generally, the better the quality of the copy then longer it will take. Colour copying will take longer than greyscale, but the figures for both are shown on our site.
Paper Tray Capacity This is the number of sheets of paper that can be kept in the copiers tray. Whenleaving a machine to copy automatically it will continue up to the set limit as long as this tray contains enough paper.
Automatic Document Feed Most copiers now come with an automatic feeder meaning you can set it to copy a set number of times and then leave it. Some older models may be manual feed only, meaning each sheet of paper must be hand-fed into the machine.
Maximum Paper Size This is the maximum size of paper that can be copied onto. Standard copies will usually go up to A3 paper size.
Multifunction Some copiers have added functions, such as stapling or hole punching. Refer to the product information for details on individual machines.
Connectivity The copier can be connected directly to a computer, usually via a USB cable or Ethernet cable.
Colour Copies This states whether the copier will copy out colour images or whether it will just copy them as greyscale. Most modern copiers have colour capability.

Frequently Asked Questions
Troubleshooting General
I need to have my photocopier repaired
If you're not sure what it is that's wrong with your machine, try taking a look at the manufacturers site. There you will usually find detailed guides for your product as well as advice on the best way to fix the problem. You can also call the manufacturers help lines for support with broken machines. You can find a list of manufacturers website's and contact numbers here. Back to top
Can I network my photocopier?
Most photocopiers are stand alone ones and cannot be networked in an office environment. If you purchase one of our all-in-one machines, then these can be networked and the printing and fax functionality can be used by the whole office, but photocopying will still need to be manually transferred to the machine. Back to top
Why do my photocopies come out faded?
Firstly, check the quality of your original document. If this is low quality then the photocopies will be too. If the original document is a good quality, then something in the photocopier is causing the fading. The most common causes are toner running low or the drum unit needing replacing. If the toner is low you can top this up yourself by purchasing replacement toner cartridges and rollers. If the drum unit needs replacing, the best thing to do is to contact your manufacturer and get an engineer to come out and fix it. Back to top
How can I improve the quality of my photocopies?
| You can improve quality by making sure the document you photocopy is a good quality, since this will have a direct affect on the quality of your copy. You should also check your photocopier has plenty of toner and that the drum unit and feeders are functioning correctly. Most photocopiers come with settings you can edit such as light intensity, colour and resolution. You should refer to your photocopiers manual for instructions on how to make the best use of these, but in many cases changing them can improve the quality of the copy, for example increasing light intensity on a dark document.
