I found an interesting video on how businesses - and therefore employees - can lose sight of why they do something, instead focusing on what they do.  The pitch here is that by looking at the why, you'll become more successful and really connect with potential customers.

It's an interesting idea, though some of the examples given are, perhaps, a shade too big for small businesses to relate to meaningfully. Yet there's something of value here, even if it's only to prompt a moment of reflection about why you started a business, or, if you're an employee, what made you want to work somewhere in the first place.

Inksmith - thank you for sharing the concept of Why with others. I know the more people who learn about the existence of the Why, the more people will wake up inspired to do the things and work for the companies that inspire them. Your point is bang on. Even big companies start small. The Why exists in all organizations regardless of size or industry because all organizations are comprised of people. And the Why is human part of an organization. Thank you again for sharing the Why.

Simon - thanks for your comment. This sort of stuff fascinates me, especially the neurological aspects of it. On your point of people working for companies that inspire them, have you heard of Zappo? I believe in their recruitment process they offer people money to leave, in an effort to weed out the candidates there for the cash and not the company and its values. Very clever!
