Small businesses (SMEs) have stolen a march on corporates when it comes to hiring staff, according to a
survey by recruitment specialist Angela Mortimer plc. Why? Because candidates feel SMEs offer greater flexibility, a better work environment and more career prospects.
While big companies think that applicants want the kudos of being part of a large firm, the truth is that people, especially new graduates, take a holistic view of a job, from salary to office culture. The report says that SMEs are more creative in their recruitment processes and look at the whole candidate rather than taking a tickbox approach.
The findings are a sign of the times. People now take quality of life into account when looking for a job, even in these belt-tightening days. A survey by
Citrix Online shows that 20 per cent of UK employees would take a pay cut if they could have a more flexible approach to the working week, and small business owners have picked up on this – 39 per cent would allow flexible working, if requested.
