Before anyone gets up in arms, that's a quote. I'm not saying your boss is incompetent -- New Scientist is. (Well, they're writing about research that suggests it.) Also, this proclamation doesn't really apply to small businesses; instead it's more likely to be accurate in big companies with lots of levels of hierarchy. Be thankful you work in a smaller business!

Hooray! It's snowing! The white stuff hides all the grime and makes everything magical. As a child, I loved it when it snowed in London and, as an adult who's fortunate enough to have a garden, I love it too. The pear tree's boughs weighed down, snow creating miniature mountain ranges; foxes' footprints in the morning and a cat who, we hope, will take her first steps out into a new world.
I found a BBC interview with Serena Williams in which she talks about Post-it notes. Apparently she writes them to herself before a match to motivate, er, her. Presumably they say helpful things such as 'You can do this', 'You're the best!', 'Don't start going mental at line judges' and so on. (There's a link to the vid at the end of this – but don't skip to it yet!)
For a few years now, I've wondered why some envelopes are called Manila (or manilla) ones. Initially I thought it might have been that, like Champagne and Melton Mowbray pork pies, manilla envelopes had to be made in Manila to be 'official'. But, after a bit of digging, I've found out that's not the case. Apparently it's because Manila envelopes were originally made out of Manila hemp. (Though they're not necessarily made from it now.)

With the Christmas party season coming up, we thought it would be apposite to do some research into how small businesses are feeling about hosting parties in these somewhat troubled times.

Perhaps it's unfortunate, considering one can be so useful, but I've always found the word 'gusset' a little hard to say. It makes me think of Victorian knickers for some reason; there's an aged, somehow frumpy, yet biological, quality to it. It is a shame, because when I'm trying to write about 5 Star's peel and seal manilla gusset envelopes, it's rather hard not to mention it.

The Fellowes Copyholder sits on your desk – some attach to your monitor – and holds books and paper documents open for you, so they’re easy to read and manipulate.  No more trying to prop a book open on your knees as you search for information; no more using staplers as paperweights, hoping to keep documents flat and stop them folding closed.

Up to 68 labels per minute.  That’s how fast the Brother QL-570 thermal label printer can go.  Well, can print.  Saying ‘can go’ makes it sound like a car.  (Although it is quite small).
The best way to write about a product we stock – apart from wining and dining it and getting it to spill all its secrets - is to look at a fact sheet sent by the manufacturer. It'll give you all sorts of useful information about the product's history, its best features and so on.
I'd have expected it from medicines, but not from pens. The Bic Cristal large ball pen comes with a shelf life. Who'd have thought it? With the rate most stationery cupboards empty, I'm surprised any company thought that this was important, but Bic obviously does.
