On the 11th of June 2009, the world health organisation officially launched their H1N1 pandemic public announcement. Almost 9 months later, the projected 100,000 a day death toll that was screamed from pretty much every tabloid headline, news program and “Respected Scientist/Doctor/Man” who knows something about pigs, has failed to materialise. Now don’t get me wrong, this is a good thing.

On the surface, it may appear that Father Christmas (aka Santa Claus) has one of the best jobs in the world. He only has to work one day a year (let’s face it, his elves do most of the real work in the off season), he gets to eat loads of free mince pies and he’s single handedly responsible for making millions and millions of children (and adults) happy.

Are your offices closed between Christmas and New Year?

My mother was trying to install Firefox on her Mac. She asked me to do it for her, but I replied that she should try to do it first and I'd do it if she couldn't manage it.

Royal Mail is going to raise the price of First and Second Class stamps by 2p, from 6 April 2010 – that's the bad news.

Just how much are we doing to counteract climate change and lead greener lives? Not enough, apparently. With green issues at the centre of the world’s attention recently, most of us are keen to do our part and help the planet.

Small companies are much smarter than their bigger brothers, if you go by the number of patents owned.
Data from the Office of National Statistics show that firms with fewer than 50 staff held 40% of all live patents between 2000 and 2008. Medium-sized businesses (50-250 staff) could only come up with 16% of patents, while larger businesses accounted for 44%.

We recently found out that people are making their own video CVs and putting them up on sites such as YouTube. I'd stumbled across a video job application a couple of years ago, but I had no idea that it was a reasonably common thing to do.

We have recently finished a project to enhance the ‘Past Purchases’ and ‘Saved Lists’ tool on our website. We decided that for people who return to our website regularly we needed to make repeat purchasing quicker and easier

The problem I have found with many websites is that when they make changes they take the “big bang” approach which means completely revamping the site in one go.

The UK Payments Council, the trade body of the clearing banks, has decided the cheque is an anachronism in an increasingly digital age, and will be phased out by 31 October 2018.

Before anyone gets up in arms, that's a quote. I'm not saying your boss is incompetent -- New Scientist is. (Well, they're writing about research that suggests it.) Also, this proclamation doesn't really apply to small businesses; instead it's more likely to be accurate in big companies with lots of levels of hierarchy. Be thankful you work in a smaller business!

Hooray! It's snowing! The white stuff hides all the grime and makes everything magical. As a child, I loved it when it snowed in London and, as an adult who's fortunate enough to have a garden, I love it too. The pear tree's boughs weighed down, snow creating miniature mountain ranges; foxes' footprints in the morning and a cat who, we hope, will take her first steps out into a new world.

I found a BBC interview with Serena Williams in which she talks about Post-it notes. Apparently she writes them to herself before a match to motivate, er, her. Presumably they say helpful things such as 'You can do this', 'You're the best!', 'Don't start going mental at line judges' and so on. (There's a link to the vid at the end of this – but don't skip to it yet!)

For a few years now, I've wondered why some envelopes are called Manila (or manilla) ones. Initially I thought it might have been that, like Champagne and Melton Mowbray pork pies, manilla envelopes had to be made in Manila to be 'official'. But, after a bit of digging, I've found out that's not the case. Apparently it's because Manila envelopes were originally made out of Manila hemp. (Though they're not necessarily made from it now.)

With the Christmas party season coming up, we thought it would be apposite to do some research into how small businesses are feeling about hosting parties in these somewhat troubled times.

The British have long been admired for their patience, but with the world moving faster and faster everyday, is patience on its way out?
|
Perhaps it's unfortunate, considering one can be so useful, but I've always found the word 'gusset' a little hard to say. It makes me think of Victorian knickers for some reason; there's an aged, somehow frumpy, yet biological, quality to it. It is a shame, because when I'm trying to write about 5 Star's peel and seal manilla gusset envelopes, it's rather hard not to mention it.

The Fellowes Copyholder sits on your desk – some attach to your monitor – and holds books and paper documents open for you, so they’re easy to read and manipulate. No more trying to prop a book open on your knees as you search for information; no more using staplers as paperweights, hoping to keep documents flat and stop them folding closed.

Have you shopped with us before? Are you trying to find a product that you have bought before to want to order the same product again?

Up to 68 labels per minute. That’s how fast the Brother QL-570 thermal label printer can go. Well, can print. Saying ‘can go’ makes it sound like a car. (Although it is quite small).
|
The best way to write about a product we stock – apart from wining and dining it and getting it to spill all its secrets - is to look at a fact sheet sent by the manufacturer. It'll give you all sorts of useful information about the product's history, its best features and so on.

I'd have expected it from medicines, but not from pens. The Bic Cristal large ball pen comes with a shelf life. Who'd have thought it? With the rate most stationery cupboards empty, I'm surprised any company thought that this was important, but Bic obviously does.
